GENERAL FAQ
I'd love to play at your comm, but complicated set-up is complicated. I don't even know where to start. Halp?
Check out our first steps guide. If you work through that step-by-step, everything should become a lot clearer pretty quickly.
Do you allow underage players?
No. Sorry about that. Since this game allows adult content, we can't allow you to play if you're not yet of age.
I want to play at your comm, but I don't have a character journal on Dreamwidth.
Please contact the mods at section3mods[at]gmail[dot]com. We can provide you with an invite code, and you can use the DW import feature to import your character journal from any other LJ-based blogging site.
Why is the comm called Section Three?
Section 3 of the British Mental Health Act allows a patient to be detained and/or hospitalized without his or her consent. This is why British mental health patients may talk about having been "sectioned". Since none of the villagers gave their consent to be detained, the mods felt it was an appropriate name for the comm.
GAME PLAY FAQ
What kind of characters are accepted at your comm?
Any character is accepted as long as they have a human PB, and meet the requirements of the application process. If you want to play an anime or a comic character, you're allowed to do so as long as you find them a human PB. (Kind of like Christian Bale could be called Batman's human PB.) OCs are accepted as much as any other character.
What about AU versions and character- and body duplicates?
AU versions are accepted as long as the character is still stable and relatable. Character duplicates are not accepted, and body duplicates are accepted up to two characters.
What's your game premise?
Read it up here!
Why do you allow only one kind of tag style?
It's the mods' experience that if more than one style is allowed, confusion will arise among the players as to which style to use where. Since this comm is aiming to be very plot- and character development driven, we decided that narrative prose would be the style to go with.
Why do you have a cast member restriction?
The way this comm is set up requires a high level of involvement from the players as well as the mods. We're hoping that restricting the cast to ten characters will make it more manageable.
What's up with the cameos? I don't really get the concept.
The idea is to have some diversification in the cast structure. The comm will always have a maximum of ten characters participating, which means that the character dynamics will remain rather static, unless there's a way to bring in new characters, even if it's only for a short one-off appearance. It's also a way for people to play at the comm without having to commit permanently, or to test the comm before they consider applying for a full cast member position.
What's Section Three's policy on character death?
Characters can't die, in this game. They can get hurt, and any injury causes as much pain as it would in real life, but the characters can't die from it.
What's your policy regarding adult content?
Allowed. Please refer to the game play section for specifics.
My character has special, supernatural abilities. Is this a problem?
Depending on the kind of abilities, your character will most likely lose them if they enter the game. Read more about this in the game play section.
Pup trading. What's that about?
In Section Three, you're allowed to let someone else thread as your character for a while. Some restrictions apply--the person taking the wheel of your character either has to be another permanent player, they have to have played a cameo at the comm in the past, or they have to fill out a cameo application and wait for it to be approved before they can play your character. This option exists so players can avoid having to thread with themselves, or so players can take a step back and get an outside look at their character and how they interact with the team.
The show my character is from just aired a new season. Can I canon-bump?
No. Your character is isolated and working on their emotional stability; the powers that be won't allow anything from your character's old life disturbing them.
TECHNICAL FAQ
Constantly having to switch accounts is a pain in the ass. Is there a way around this?
There is, as long as you're using the Firefox browser. There's an LJ login extension you can download and install which will make switching accounts a lot less troublesome, as it supports all LJ based blogging sites, including Dreamwidth. Caveat: enabling this plugin will disable your LJ scrapbook. If you want to use the scrapbook while you have LJ Login installed, you will have to disable the plugin in the Tools => Add-ons section beforehand.
I don't have an AIM account. How do I get one?
You get an AIM accout by clicking here and signing up for one. You can download the AIM messenger here for Windows, here for Mac, and here for Linux. You can, of course, also use Trillian or Pidgin or Miranda or any other multi-channel IM program of your choice.
How do I access the AIM chatroom?
That depends on the program you're using. However, the Section Three chatroom will always be found under the ID of sectionthree.
How do I format chatlogs to post them?
Find your chat history and copy and paste the relevant section into Microsoft Word. Go over it and fix spelling and grammar mistakes, get rid of OOC comments and clean it up a little. When you're done, hit ctrl+a followed by ctrl+h. If you've got a time stamp in your chatlog, remove it by entering ^# for each numerical character, and ^$ for each letter in the "Find What" input field, leaving the "Replace" field empty, and hitting "replace all". (So if your timestamp says [01:30], you would enter [^#^#:^#^#]. If it says [01:50 AM], you would enter [^#^#:^#^# ^$^$]. Etc.)
Now, let's, for the sake of simplicity, say that the players' nicks are Joan and Josephina. Enter Joan into the "Find What" field, and replace it with ^p<font style="color: #ff0000;">Joan</font>. Then replace Josephina with ^p<font style="color: #0000ff;">Josephina</font>. Close the Find & Replace interface, hit ctrl+a, center the entire document and then align it left again (this is to get rid of stray spaces at the beginning or the end of paragraphs), and then copy and paste the entire thing into a DW post. Ideally, you should have ended up with something looking a lot like this.
