Application

Applying to Section Three happens in two stages, stage one being the equivalent of a reserve at other comms. To complete stage one, please copy and paste the form provided in the text box below into a comment to this post and fill it out.

Player journal: Your LJ or DW.

Email address: Your email address.

Character name: Your character's name.

Character source: The source your character is based on. Not applicable if your character is an OC.

Character journal: Your character journal.

Recent writing sample: Please link us to a piece of your writing. Preferably, it should be one featuring the character you're apping; if you're planning to create a new pup for the comm, then it should be one featuring the character closest in personality to the one you're apping. Ideally, it should be very character-centred.

You can link us to a prose thread, an asteriks-and-italics thread, a transcription of a chat log or a piece of fiction. It doesn't have to be perfect, and we would like to ask you not to go back and edit it before you give us the link. As long as you personally think you did well with this particular piece, it should be more than suitable.

Emotional imbalance: As explained in the premise, your character was put in the village because the powers that be decided that he or she is emotionally imbalanced to a dangerous degree that might make them cause a negative effect on the balance of the cosmos. Please explain here what your character's emotional imbalance is, i. e. what they would be required to work on while trapped in the village.

Once the mods have received the first part of your application, we'll take a look and decide whether or not your ideas and your style agree with what we're aiming for in Section Three. If we think you a likely candidate, we'll contact you to talk to you about your ideas for and expectations of the game. If we end up getting along, we'll email you the stage two application form to fill out. You'll have two weeks to fill it out and send it back to us.

At that point, it would be unlikely for us to refuse your application; however, the mods of Section Three reserve the right to decline your second-stage application.

To give you an idea what to expect, you can find the the stage two application guide under the cut. However, please don't fill out this form until the mods email it to you personally.

Player Name: Your real name or your internet nick.

Player journal: Your personal LJ or DW.

Email and AIM: Easy enough. Please note that an AIM screen name is a requirement if you want to join Section Three. If you don't have one, it's easy enough to set one up. Please refer to the corresponding FAQ section for more information.

This email address and your screen name will be displayed in our player contact information post (locked to members). If you want any other contact info in there, please list it here as well.

Time Zone: Handy to know for other players who might want to play with you. If you keep crazy hours or if you work night shifts or anything like that, please note this here as well.

Character Name: The name of your character. Or names, if they use more than one.

Character Source: If your character is based on a fictional/historical personality or is part of a fictional universe existing in any sort of copyrighted media, please tell us the title of your source here.

Character Journal: The link to your character journal. Please note that a certain amount of basic character information needs to be available in your journal in order for us to accept your application. Read more about that in the rules post.

Age: How old is your character when they're entering the game? Do they look their age? Do they even know their exact age? Give an estimate if the source material doesn't provide a specific number.

Species: If your character isn't human, or used to belong to a species other than humans, please add a short description here.

Gender and Sex: Please tell us your character's sex and their gender identity.

Sexuality and Sexual Orientation: Nothing you're putting down here is set in stone. That said, if your character is a mature adult when they're entering the game, they will likely have developed some sort of sense of sexuality. Do they identify as straight/gay/bisexual/pansexual/transsexual/asexual, or do they refuse sexual labels? Are they single, looking, committed in a monogamous or (several) polyamorous relationship(s), playing the field, or momentarily not interested? If your character has any strong convictions regarding sexuality--homophobia, heterophobia, transphobia would be the three most common ones--please note that down here as well.

Canon Used: If your character is based on any sort of copyrighted media, please state here how much of their "official" canon you're using.

Keep this section short. No explanation of the canon; just name the episode/book/canon point where you're planning to deviate from your character's canon. If there are any important canon debates about your character's backstory--things the official canon is contradictory about--briefly state your take on those. If you're changing any canon before the canon point where you're leaving canon altogether, list those changes as well--briefly. Anything more elaborate should go in the history section.

Appearance: Find us a picture (or several) of your character. Not of the actor who's PB'ing your character, but of your character. If you can't find one, pick the one that comes closest.

Add a few lines about your character's dress sense. Are they a formal or a casual dresser? Do they care a lot about their appearance or not at all? Do they spend a lot of money on clothes or do they hate clothes shopping? Do they like to wear jewelry? Any tattoos, body piercings, or experimental hair?

Tell us also about any physical abnormalities. Does your character have any sort of apparent physical disability? Any noticeable scarring? Deformities? Simple oddities that people would notice when they look at your character? List anything you think important.

Psychology: What kind of person is your character? This section should be detailed and show that you know your character, know how they think and how they work, and why. What kind of personality do they present to the world, and who are they hiding beneath it? Do they have any issues, favourite pet peeves or strong opinions? If so, why do they have them? If not, why not? Basically, this is where you tell us what makes your character tick.

This is also where you explain the emotional imbalance in your character's psyche that landed them in the village in the first place. Why is this an issue for your character? How will they react to getting told they need to work on it? Will they consider working on it, or will they dismiss the idea as ridiculous? Are they even aware of this imbalance, or will it be news to them?

Feel free to make this as long as you think it needs to be. Please try to make it clearly understandable for anyone, even and especially people who are unfamiliar with your character's source material.

Skills/Abilities: Does your character have any particular skills or extraordinary abilities? Please mention anything from l33t hack0rz sk1llz or ninja hand-to-hand combat training to alien super-hearing and photographic memory. If your character has super-human abilities, the mods will probably have already spoken to you about reducing them to normal, human levels. Please describe your character's abilities as they would be upon entering the game--with reduced magic/psychic/etc abilities.

Weaknesses: List your character's physical and psychic weaknesses. This could be allergies, bad eyesight, any kind of chronic diseases and disorders--including officially diagnosed psychiatric conditions--or any sort of other physical impairment. Psychic weaknesses might for example include things like a sensitivity to psychic visions that come with any sort of debilitating symptoms or extreme mood swings, or a psychically enhanced empathy for other people's emotions that is out of your character's control. In this section, you shouldn't list any psychological weaknesses like greed, jealousy, dishonesty or any other sort of character traits.

History: Tell us about your character's life, starting with the moment they came into existence and finishing with them entering the game's narration. We realize that with some characters, this might get a bit long, but we would like to ask you to be thorough anyway.

People who don't know your source material should have no trouble following. This doesn't mean, of course, that you have to describe every detail about everything that ever happened to your character. Just hit on those events that made a major difference in your character's development and give us the major thread of your character's life, summarizing some parts and describing in greater detail those specific things that you think shaped them and explain them.

Reason for applying: This isn't about your character, this is about you. Tell us why you decided to app at Section Three, and what your expectations are of the comm. This isn't a job application, so this section is not about trying to sound as enthusiastic and attractive as possible. It's just a way for us to find out whether your ideas about what the comm should be match ours, and if our players actually want from the comm what we've designed it to offer. Please be as honest as possible in this section.

Writing experience: Please tell us about your previous writing experience. How long have you been actively roleplaying/writing fiction or fanfiction? If English isn't your native language, how long have you been writing in English? Have you ever published anything? Are you planning to some day? What do you think are your particular strengths and weaknesses? We want to hear your thoughts on writing, please.

Writing sample: Write a narrative third person/present tense writing sample focusing on your character. This can be as long as you want it to be and about whatever you want it to be.
